First, my friends call me Rick, please feel free to do so.

I tutored various subjects and taught self-defense full time for five years before moving to Hawaii. After that I continued to tutor and teach self-defense part time. My primary areas of expertise are Alternative Teaching Methods, Behavior Adjustment and Positive Reinforcement Methodology and Methods of Physical Fitness.

Alternative Teaching Methods

This is something for which I have a talent. By working one on one with your child or you as an adult (having tutored adults for G.E.D.s and literacy) I can find that particular method which helps your child get over that bump in his/her education process. Sometimes it's as simple as an unusual example, other times it's an entirely knew way of looking at a problem in order to find the solution.

Behavior Adjustments

This is also referred to as behavior modification, behavior management and probably some other popular phrases by now in the education system. What it boils down to is not reinforcing a negative behavior and promoting a positive behavior. There is no such thing, as I've heard stated before, technically as expected behavior. One of my primary jobs when tutoring your child is to help to adjust his or her behavior to help him or her want to be a better student, not to be afraid of being a poor student. This is an important distinction and one not always noticed by my peers. I've also worked with violent behavior as well by combining behavior modification and martial arts lessons.

Positive Reinforcement Methodology

This is NOT, just good boy good girl pat on the back good job. There is an entire method of starting with general positive reinforcement for general behavior and grades and refining the reinforcement techniques of rewards and consequences to meet each individual students needs.

Please don't get the idea that grounding solves all problems. Eventually the student (your child) adjusts to those situations, being without possessions taken away from him/her and continues with the same behaviors and grades.

To quote a section in my book, “Do you want your child to be afraid of doing the wrong thing or do you want your child to want to do the right thing?”

Methods of Physical Fitness

Do you know that 25% of our children are now obese?

NO, they won't grow out of it! This is the first generation of children that will NOT outlive their parents.

This has to be stopped WITHOUT causing psychological trauma to our children which would increase their eating behaviors due to depression.

Tuition

Mr. Kirkham has tried to find a way to help as many people as possible, but naturally he must also take care of his own family as well and therefore must charge reasonable rates based on his experience.

Tutors who charge less and try to retain their positions when it is no longer necessary or just a refresher schedule is needed cost families much more.

“In order to make sure I'm not 'fly by night' and can take care of my own family while continuing to attempt to get fired, I must charge $75.00 per hour. “

Addendum: Okay, I'm doing this for one lady right now so it's only fair that I do it for others here in Honolulu Hawaii and surrounding areas. We have a recession going on and as I write this one of the worst ideas I've ever seen for saving money at the expense of our children's education, furlough days where children not only don't get the education they need, but parents must at times pay extra money for daycare.
